Top 5 expensive football players

One of the most peculiar transfer windows in recent memory occurred during the summer of 2023. Many of the most well-known football players in the world were pulled towards Saudi Arabia by absurd contract offers, and Chelsea seemed intent on signing every young talent in Europe.

The 10 most expensive football players in the world right now are included in a survey, and their prices are quite astounding. Not to put too fine a point on it, but we doubt that Boehly or any other Saudi Arabian club owner could afford some of the names on this list. Using a mathematical model they created themselves, the CIES Football Observatory examined the highest transfer values for footballers globally for their analysis.

1. Kylian Mbappe (142 million £)

Surprisingly, despite finishing as Ligue 1’s best scorer for the previous five seasons and scoring a hat-trick in the 2022 World Cup final, Kylian Mbappe of Paris Saint-Germain is only ranked 10th on the list. Even if his current market value is a staggering €163 million (£142 million), you would think that as one of the top players in the world, he would be worth much more.

Given that the Frenchman’s current contract is about to expire, there has been a lot of conjecture regarding his future in recent months. Mbappe is set to depart on a free agent to join Real Madrid in the summer of 2020 because he is unwilling to sign a new contract with the French team. The Parisian club now has very little leverage in the situation because they run the risk of losing both their top player and a valuable asset for nothing.

2. Phil Foden (£145.2 million)

Phil Foden of Manchester City, whose valuation is €167 million (£145.2 million), is ranked ninth on the list. With more than 200 appearances under his belt for Manchester City, the 23-year-old has already won 12 trophies in his career, including a historic treble in the 2022–2023 campaign.

Foden, who is still developing, is regarded as one of the most technically gifted English players of this age and is one of the best dribblers in the league. However, he has yet to reach his peak at the international level, scoring just three goals in 25 appearances. Foden will believe that his countrymen seldom value him.

3. Jamal Musiala (£148.2 million)

Unbelievably, Jamal Musiala was formerly a member of the Chelsea youth program. The German attended Whitgift School in Croydon before deciding to join Bayern Munich in 2019. The child decided to leave England at an early age to pursue intriguing chances abroad, much like players like Jadon Sancho and a man who has not yet been included on this list. Although Musiala was born in Stuttgart, he had the opportunity to play for England, even at the Under-15 level, but ultimately chose to represent his nation.

4. Gavi – £151,660,000

Midfielders with exceptional talent are a specialty of Barcelona; Iniesta, Xavi, and Sergio Busquets are just a few examples. The most recent addition to this list is Gavi, a young football player who is already regarded as one of the best in the world for his position. At just 19, Gavi has already played for Barcelona in nearly 100 games and was a key player in their La Liga victory the previous year.

In 25 appearances for Spain’s national team, he has also scored five goals. The Spanish player has a contract worth €174 million (£151.6 million), but Barcelona has added a $1 billion release clause.

5. Pedri (£155 million)

Pedri, a gifted young player from Barcelona, made his debut earlier than Gavi and currently has a somewhat higher value. He’s been likened to players like Xavi and even Michael Laudrup because of his little build, attributes, position, and style of play, which makes him one of the top wonderkids in international football right now. Even if some large offers were to come in, like his manager, it would not be shocking to see the Spaniard play out the rest of his career with the Catalan giants.

To be in the running to recruit the 20-year-old, though, you’ll need to spend at least €178 million (£155 million), and for the time being, he appears to be happy at Barcelona.
