It was revealed on Thursday, August 31, that Prithvi Shaw would be making a comeback to play for Northamptonshire in the 2024 county season. It was confirmed that Shaw would be available for both the County Championship and the One-Day Cup.
Only four games were played by Shaw for Northamptonshire in 2023 as a knee injury cut short his season. Nevertheless, during his brief tenure, he made an impression, amassing 429 runs, including a record hit of 244 off 153 deliveries against Somerset in the One-Day Cup.
Shaw claimed that he was also contacted by other counties for the upcoming season but ultimately decided to remain with Northamptonshire. “It was really frustrating to get hurt and have to leave early this time. My goal is always to assist the team in winning games.
“After the tournament, a few teams contacted me to discuss playing for them the following year, but I feel like I still have more to do with Northamptonshire. I’m grateful that they offered me the chance this year and I’m excited to return.
Chief Executive Ray Payne commented on his return for the upcoming season, saying, “We witnessed the effect Prithvi made in his brief time this year and how warmly he was embraced by supporters. It’s incredibly satisfying to have already guaranteed his return for the following season and for the entire following year. It’s worked out fantastically since I believe he was as eager to return as we were to welcome him back.
The team’s head coach, John Sadler, expressed his excitement over Shaw’s return for the upcoming season. “Prithvi is an incredibly talented individual, and what he accomplished for us in such a short period of time was amazing. The possibility for him to do this next year is really exciting for us all since he was incredibly disappointed not to be able to stay longer due to his injury because he wanted to play some red ball cricket.
