Although they may appear like a relatively new concept, substitutions have a long history because extra legs were required by the rules of the game during the allotted time for football games. The first time substitutions were used on the pitch was during a World Cup qualifier between West Germany and Saarland, held before the 1954 World Cup.

Horst Eckel was replaced in that game by Richard Gottinger, who seemed to be the first official replacement in football history. The English football hierarchy only permitted the removal of one player in the event of an injury sustained during play. They were not in favor of substituting players mid-game.

However, managers began to take advantage of this chance more frequently, and during a Charlton vs. Bolton Wanderers game, Keath Peacock became the first player in English football history to be substituted.

Since substitutes had already been implemented, all of the major football associations began to modify the procedure. Teams in the Premier League were allowed to select up to three players on the bench in 1992, of whom two could be utilized in the actual game.

Three players could be named as substitutes and five players could be named on the reserve bench for the 1996–1997 season. That was raised to seven once more, and participants might switch around during the game. That was the situation before the Covid-19 epidemic. It was decided to implement a five substitutions rule and a maximum of nine players on the bench because players tend to miss games after contracting COVID-19.

Since then, it has been the situation, and all of the major football leagues worldwide have had the rule in effect for the most recent season. Given that teams are unwilling to deviate from their five-substitution policy, it is likely to be in place for the upcoming season as well. Three opportunities for substitution should be given to make the five changes.

A further substitution may be made during extra time under the new regulations, and it will not be included in the regular substitution total. Furthermore, if a player sustains both a probable concussion and a serious head injury, two substitutions for concussions are allowed.

An agreement has occasionally been made regarding the total number of substitutes for a friendly match between two teams; this number may exceed the five substitutions allowed by law. The replacement process

Any available substitute names should be presented to the referee before the game; names not on the list are prohibited from taking the field. The replacements should be disclosed to the match referee, and they should only enter the pitch with his approval.

When a custodian is substituted for a player in the starting lineup, the referee must be notified beforehand. The International Football Association has given its approval to every modification.
