“Bill Kenwright, the chairman of the Everton Football Club, passed away peacefully last night at the age of 78, surrounded by his family and loved ones,” the club announced. After initially joining the board at Goodison Park in 1989, Kenwright succeeded Phillip Carter as chairman in 2004. He died in August after undergoing surgery to remove a malignant lesion from his liver.

Born in Liverpool, Kenwright became a wealthy theatrical mogul and film producer. He was married to the British actress Jenny Seagrove.

Everton went on, “The club has lost a chairman, a leader, a friend, and an inspiration.”

Rival teams and former players also showed their admiration. On X, now known as Twitter, Wayne Rooney, who made his breakthrough at Goodison Park at the age of 16, wrote: “Devastated to hear the sad news about Bill Kenwright. Having known Bill since I was a small child, he has greatly influenced both my professional and personal life. Fantastic guy and a major inspiration. We are all thinking of Bill’s friends and family.”

People all around the city recalled Kenwright for his support of the families of the Liverpool supporters who lost their lives in the Hillsborough disaster.
